Until the early 1970’s, Orange County was famous for its citrus production, with over 80,000 acres of orange groves.

Its mainstay industry is ferns and tropical plants, and it’s only 6 miles from the 7,000 acre Wekiwa Springs State Park.  This pristine park is untouched from the days when Ponce DeLeon roamed the area, searching for the elusive fountain of youth, watched from the glades by the Timucuan Indians who lived here.  There are still a number of mounds in the park that were created by the Timucuans.  Visitors to the park enjoy swimming, canoeing and picnicking, along with a museum depicting the natural and cultural history of the area.

And Lake Apopka is right nearby.  From there you have access to the extensive Central Florida lake system, a water wonderland for residents, where you can experience some of the best fresh water bass fishing in Florida, within minutes of the city limits.  Or if golf’s your game, there are world-class golf courses, with landscaped layouts to challenge the professional and encourage the weekend amateur.

Right from the times of the Timucuans, this very fertile area has been renowned for agriculture. And it’s still the case today, with a large segment of Apopka’s economy based around the growing of indoor plants. Foliage growers here have taken over the North American market and the industry brings in millions of dollars annually to the area. Cut flowers, blooming plants, roses, bulbs and small foliage are distributed throughout the US, Canada and Europe from right here in Apopka.

The community spirit is strong in Apopka. Each April, artists and craftsmen come to Apopka from all over the nation to participate in the Apopka Art & Foliage Festival, hosted by the Apopka Women’s Club at Kit Land Nelson Park.  This is a big event for the locals.  It brings the community together and produces thousands of dollars for local charities.  Arts, crafts and blooming plants are available for purchase, and over 25,000 visitors enjoy foliage displays, bus tours of area nurseries, children’s art, and great entertainment. 

As part of the Orange County Public School system, the Apopka area schools are fully accredited by the Florida State School Board and comply with very rigid standards.  Graduates of our schools are well prepared for college by some of the finest teachers in the nation.

And when your child is ready for college, Apopka residents are very close to Rollins College, the University of Central Florida, Valencia Community College, Seminole Community College, Lake-Sumter Community College, Jones Business College, Mid-Florida Technical Institute, and branches of several other educational institutions.
