Deltona Florida Homes
Florida’s best-kept secret
The town of Deltona, located on the northern shores of Lake Monroe in the county of Volusia, 26 miles north of Orlando and 22 miles from Daytona Beach on I 4, represents all that is good about a planned community.
Conceived by the legendary Mackle brothers, the town attracted worldwide attention forty years ago as an example of how to create an instant community. The engineers, town planners, and construction teams thought of everything and it was almost as though Deltona sprang up overnight out of the pristine lakefront farmland.

The planners had thought of everything. Before any of the new residents moved into the bargain priced, low maintenance homes, the instant town of Deltona had a golf course, schools, a country club complete with swimming pool, tennis courts, shops and eateries. It became a model for other Florida retirement communities developed by the trailblazing Mackle brothers and helped to establish the reputations of American town planners in the eyes of the world.
First developed as a retirement community, Deltona is now a thriving metropolis of nearly 75,000 people. There is now an almost even split between retirees and families with breadwinners who often commute to nearby Orlando or Daytona Beach.
In fact so successful was this first development in 1962, that a company called Deltona has gone on to create a further ten planned communities through out Florida using the Mackle brothers successful formula based on the greenbelt concept. This approach sculpts personal home sites, commercial areas, schools, churches, parks and civic facilities into the surrounding environment. Features like large rock formations, trees and lakes are retained and town planners design roads and infrastructure around them. That’s why this little hamlet is so popular today. The town was instant and so was the charm.
