Dunedin Florida Homes

Contact Rigler Realty if you want to sell your home in----Dunedin—a wee dram of Scotland

The City of Dunedin, on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, is located north of Clearwater in Pinellas County and is one of the oldest towns in Florida. Its official history starts way back in the early 1850’s when an official title deed for property was issued to a Mr. Garrison.

It wasn’t until the late 1850’s however that the town was officially named Dunedin when two Scottish merchants organized a petition. Dunedin was the original name of Edinburgh in Scotland, the hometown of many of the early settlers to this area, so the petition was strongly supported by the townsfolk.

Scottish PipesThe town’s Scottish traditions are still remembered and are celebrated every year with the staging of the Highland Games and Spring Clan Gathering in April. This tradition of Scottish games, competitions, music, authentic Scottish food, and tests of strength and skill, takes the town back to its Celtic roots. The festival attracts visitors from around the world who come to participate in the event. Three pipe and drum bands from Dunedin perform in contests with bands from regions far and wide.

The tossing of the caber by very large men in kilts is alone worth traveling to Dunedin to see! And the haunting beauty of Scottish pipers set against the backdrop of a sinking sun over the Bay, will live in your memory forever.

DUNEDIN HOMES FOR SALE

Prior to the coming of the railroad around the turn of the eighteenth century, Dunedin was a staging area and seaport for the area’s produce. The town, especially along the waterfront, retains much of the ambience and quaint qualities of these earlier times.

Dunedin Florida BeachWith a six-mile coastline, Dunedin’s recreational life centers on the waters and beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. The residents here actually treat the warm Gulf waters and beaches as their private backyard. Dunedin has nice marina for your boat.

Swimming, snorkeling, sailing, fishing and scuba diving are normal pursuits for residents and visitors alike. And the many public beaches, like the St Joseph Sound, afford inspiring views of the region’s most cherished treasure—a setting sun painting the crystal waters and skies of the Gulf in hues of crimson and gold.

Schools

Pinellas County has recently implemented a school choice program that allows students, in consultation with parents, to attend a school of their choice within a specific geographic area. A refinement of this program, the magnet program, offers students a wide range of school choices with specialized curriculums.

The fundamental schools in the magnet program offer a structured back-to-basics approach that encourages family involvement. These schools also encourage parent-teacher-student cooperation and develop customized programs that dovetail with career choices and are tailored to meet a student’s individual needs.

Involvement in a magnet program enables students to travel to any school in the County free of charge.

With 150,000 students, the Pinellas County School District is the 7th largest in the State of Florida and the 22nd largest in the country. With over 13,000 employees, Pinellas County Schools is also the largest employer in the County. There are 141 elementary, middle, high and specialty public schools located here, serving the educational requirements of Pinellas County.

There are numerous local and very active Chambers of Commerce in the Dunedin area and the region, as a whole, has programs designed to attract businesses, large and small. In fact, represented in the Tampa/ Clearwater/ St. Petersburg area are over 200 of Fortune magazine’s 500 top companies.
