the best kept secret in Florida.
Right at the top of the Tampa Bay metropolitan region, located between Florida’s “Nature Coast” to the north, and the “Sun Coast” in the south, lies the city of Hudson. Set on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, this wildlife preserve offers some of the best fresh water and saltwater fishing in the country, some of Florida’s most exotic fauna and, according to a number of recent surveys, is one of the top places in America to retire.
Maybe that’s what has turned this sleepy backwater into one of the hottest real estate markets in the country. And the boom is likely to continue with a recent article in the Wall Street Journal saying Hudson is “one of the top 3 places in the Florida to buy a vacation home.” Locals are comparing the boom here to Key West’s expansion 15 years ago.
The town is thriving. The citrus groves and cow pastures are giving way to the up-market subdivisions and gated communities like Beacon Woods. Older waterfront homes are being pulled down and being replaced by 3,000 square foot mansions.

Yes the community is growing, but there are still homes to be had here for under $200,000.
But the area still retains the rich diversity of wildlife that so enchanted early settlers—the bald eagles, the ospreys, flamingos, herons and egrets—that can still be seen from the kitchen windows or front yards of many homes in the area.
And from any of the over 3,000 canal fronting homes here in Hudson, you might catch a glimpse of a manatee. These gentle creatures, often called sea cows because they graze in underwater herds, inhabit the Gulf waters of this region. They can grow to over 15 feet in length and often weigh over 3000 pounds.

Nearly all these canal homes have private jetties where the residents keep a boat for quick access to the Gulf for a day of fishing. This part of the gulf is famous for catches of tarpon…a fighting fish found in abundance in this area that can tip the scales at 200 pounds.

There are numerous golf courses in and around Hudson. Courses that will challenge low handicap players or layouts that will forgive the odd stray shot from a weekend hacker. There is an abundance of rivers and streams for kayaking and canoeing, and several state parks that offer first-class facilities for hiking, biking, and camping
Bordered by Port Richey to the south, Shady Hills, Aripeka and the new Suncoast Parkway to the north and northeast, and Moon Lake in the east, Hudson is a 40-minute drive from Tampa and St. Petersburg and 30 minutes from Clearwater.
First explored in the early 16th century by the Spanish explorers Hernando de Soto and Juan Ponce de Leon---de Leon believed a secret elixir that gave eternal life would be found in this region of Florida—the area later became a haven for bands of cut-throat pirates who preyed on the Spanish galleons heading home to Spain laden with wealth from the New World.
Florida, firstly named “Pascua Florida”—meaning “flowery Easter”—by Ponce de Leon because he arrived during the Easter holiday in 1513, was obtained by the United States from the Spanish in 1821 for a promise to pay 5 million dollars in war damages. The actual amount paid was only about $200,000, in the first great land deal conducted in the State of Florida.
Apparently the Seminole Indians were not aware or hadn’t been part of the transaction. They fought against the encroaching settlement of their land in a series of Indian wars that culminated around Dade County in the 1850’s, after which the Seminoles were driven into the Everglades or shipped to reservations in Oklahoma.
After the Indian wars, white settlement in the area increased apace. In the 1870’s, Isaac Hudson arrived in the area that now bears his name, seeking better pastureland for his stock. When a room in Hudson’s home was later used as a post office, the name Hudson’s Landing was forwarded to the postal authority. The postal authority shortened the name to Hudson, to give the town it’s present name.
This is a delightful area.
A wonderful area to investigate if you are thinking about retirement. And increasingly, a wonderful area to raise a family. Pinellas County, one of the leading zones in the United States for electronics manufacturing is less than twenty miles away. The District School Board of Pasco services the area with an excellent school system that has programs to both challenge students scholastically and to help prepare them socially for adult life.
