The City of Tampa, the commercial heart of the region, is a thriving waterfront metropolis where ultra-modern skyscrapers shadow groupings of well-preserved structures from earlier times. These clusters of historically important buildings trace the development of the city and identify eras of importance. This is a city that cares about and honors its past.

It’s also a city with a vision for the future. There’s a river walk planned for the downtown area that will rival any in the country. There are eco-friendly projects underway in South Tampa that will see city parks, gardens and the landscaping of private residences, in many areas, irrigated with highly treated wastewater. These projects will preserve precious drinking water and allow the city to continue to grow in ecologically sustainable ways. The project was initiated in response to the 2000 drought.

Clearwater, with its barrier island beaches, is among America’s most popular vacation destinations and holiday home locations. That’s why the population swells by more than 30,000 during the winter months. Many return to become permanent residents The downtown area of Clearwater acts as a gateway, via highway 60, to the northern barrier islands in the chain that runs along the coastline of Pinellas County, separating the mainland from the warm, turquoise-blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico People love the fishing here. And the climate is nearly perfect, with temperatures averaging over 60 degrees in January.

St. Petersburg is a hub for recreational fisherman and has the largest municipal marina in the region. It’s a city of libraries, museums and waterfront parks. A January ’06 economic scorecard, comparing Charlotte, Dallas, Raleigh, Atlanta and Jacksonville, named the St Petersburg region at or near the top of the list for: job creation, employment and labor force growth, income and productivity, and education.

St. Petersburg is now the fourth largest city in Florida, and has been judged America’s most livable community by the Partners for Livable Communities, a non-profit organization that assesses quality of life in cities around the country.

Forbes Magazine says St. Petersburg is the best place for business and career opportunities in Florida. It has been rated in survey after survey as one of the top places to run a small business. Southern Business and Development calls the downtown area “the best in the South.” And Kenneth City, only a few miles away, has all the benefits but none of the disadvantages of big city living.
