Land O'Lakes Florida Homes
Just 16 miles north of downtown Tampa in Pasco County is the aptly named Land O’Lakes. This delightful, well-planned community of 22,000 people has a layout that takes advantage of the 100 surrounding lakes to create a rural ambience in an area that is an easy commute to the thriving commercial centers of the Clearwater, St Petersburg and the city of Tampa.
Land O’Lakes is an area where the first-time home buyer can still get into the market. It’s a place where newcomers to the Tampa Bay region can buy a reasonably priced home close to the all the job opportunities that Central Florida has to offer. But it is often the various opportunities for outdoor recreation that first attract people here.

As the southern gateway to Florida’s Nature Coast, Pasco County offers opportunities to interact with a cross-section of Florida’s unique flora, fauna and marine life. You can see Florida panthers, alligators, crocodiles, otters, deer, bears and cougars as you stroll the trails over at Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. The park is also a haven for numerous varieties of birds including flamingos, brightly colored wood ducks, birds of prey and marine birds such as egrets and herons.
But it is the manatees that visitors to Homosassa Springs fall in love with. These gentle creatures, often called cows of the sea because they graze in underwater herds, live wild in the warm waters of the Gulf and estuaries near Land O’Lakes. The Park, with its natural springs, provides a refuge for manatees that have been injured in the wild and a home, prior to release, for those born here in captivity. You can view these pre-historic creatures that are related to elephants being hand-fed, up close and personal, from an underwater observatory in the Park.
Although a mature manatee can grow to 13 feet in length and weigh as much as a small car, they are, as herbivores, completely harmless. In fact the only reason the Park stopped visitors from swimming with these fascinating creatures is that close contact with humans may stifle their only defense of shyness. You see they have no natural enemies except for us humans. Oh it’s not that we mean to harm them. It’s that they are killed or injured by collisions with boats, ingestion of fishhooks and entanglement in nets and fishing lines.
From the majestic coastline that is the Gulf of Mexico on the County’s western border, past moss-draped oaks, slow moving rivers, virgin pine forests, lakes and streams to the rolling hills in the east, this is an area that makes you just want to get out there and embrace life. And Land O’Lakes is right in the middle of it all.
