Pinellas County was firstly home to the Timucua Indians, one of the four tribes in Florida. The Timucuans were traders and farmers who cultivated corn and constructed substantial homes in the region. They offered great resistance to the original Spanish explorers, in the early part of the 16th century, and continued to oppose European settlement for the next 300 years.

Largo Florida SunsetThe first permanent European settler in Pinellas County was Odet Phillippe in the early 1800s. Odet Phillippe had been a surgeon in Napoleon’s army and was one of the first “snowbirds” to come here seeking escape from harsh northern winters. The harsh northern winters of France in this case, so Odet obviously didn’t intend to return home often.

The Pinellas county area proved attractive to farmers from the 13 northern colonies seeking opportunities and land. A steady stream of settlers arrived throughout the 1800’s. The fertile land combined with a perfect climate to produce a rich bounty and in 1886 the Orange Belt railroad was constructed to service the needs of the ever-growing population and facilitate commerce, by transporting the regions bounty, of citrus and other produce, to the Northern markets. The region we now call Largo was still unnamed when the railroad was being constructed

When the railroad surveyors told the residents of what we now call Largo that no station would be established without an official name for the region, locals quickly responded.

The name “Largo” was chosen in a hastily called town meeting. Some say it was named after the lake of the same name that was in the area. Other historians suggest it was named after Largo in Scotland, the city that many settlers had called home before migrating to sunny Florida,

The fertile farmland produced a rich harvest of oranges and Largo became known as “Citrus City”. Eisenhower’s visionary highway system, low-cost air conditioning and Walt Disney’s legendary theme park in Orlando all worked to create a booming community here. However an unexpected freeze in 1962 that dealt a serious blow to the citrus industry introduced many changes. The orange groves were sold off to developers who built homes for an increasingly mobile American population who took the opportunity to move to the Sunbelt states. The population of Largo went from 5000 in 1950 to over 22,000 in 1970.
