Treasure Island Florida Homes
The city of Treasure Island on the Gulf of Mexico in Central Florida, is one of the Gulf beaches in the St Petersburg/Clearwater barrier island chain.
This distinctive municipality, this unique three mile-long island town has retained much of its 1950’s heritage with the preservation of over a dozen “Space Age” structures from that period. Traveling to Treasure Island is like taking a trip in a time capsule. A trip to a bygone age. A trip to Las Vegas or Palm Springs as they were in the fifties.
It was a slower-paced age then. An age of tail-finned cars and milkshakes in metal containers. Of bright flamingo pink motels with flashing blue neon lettered signs saying “The Sands” or “The Surf.“ Of stainless steal diners serving plaid shirted early birds coffee, burgers and eggs done every-which-way.
It sometimes really does feels like you have gone to another era when you visit Treasure Island. There are pink motels from the 50’s with blue neon signs and eateries with original wooden booths polished by a thousand backsides. Even City Hall here is a circa 1950’s green structure you would expect to see in a “Leave it to Beaver” episode. Come visit what many call the “retro”roadside period of Florida’s history.
And the name Treasure Island?
Well that’s a story that comes straight from Florida folklore. It seems a group of real estate developers wanted to publicize their latest property sale in the area that is now Treasure Island. One of these enterprising businessmen---whose name history failed to record---- knew pirates had once frequented the beaches on these beautiful barrier islands.
To generate interest for the sale of land, this businessman arranged for the “discovery” of a chest full of buried treasure on what is now the town of Treasure Island. The chest was put on display in a local bank’s foyer and visitors came from far and wide to see it and that gave the town its name.

With white sand beaches and the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico as the front yard and Boca Ciega Bay for a backyard, residents and visitors alike can spend the endless summer of this sub-tropical paradise swimming, sunning, snorkeling, parasailing and fishing. And when the sunlight is replaced by neon light in the evenings, there are numerous fine restaurants on the island, as well as an array of shops and entertainment spots. Of course the real night owls go across the causeway to the non-stop entertainment that is St Petersburg, only minutes away.

There is a week long Pirate Days celebration here in Treasure Island over the July 4th weekend, a food festival in April, a nationally renowned sport kite competition in January and 365 days a year of pleasurable living in this unique waterfront community.
Treasure Island is only six miles from downtown St Petersburg, near to the schools, hospitals, commercial activities and employment opportunities of Pinellas County and yet only ninety minutes from Orlando. Tampa is less than an hour away as is the University of Southern Florida.
