---exclusivity and convenience

Wesley Chapel CitrusBordered by citrus groves and pasturelands, this exclusive community of some 25,000 residents, just north of Tampa, Clearwater and St. Petersburg, is an enclave of good taste and superb town planning.

Fast growing Wesley Chapel retains much of its rural charm, yet offers fast, convenient access to the nearby commercial and business centers, hospitals and universities of the Tampa Bay area. The 27,000-student University of Southern Florida in Tampa and St. Leo University in San Antonio are minutes away. And construction of the Pasco-Hernando Community College in Wesley Chapel is scheduled to commence shortly.

Business people and community leaders have been quick to respond to this influx of residents. The town now has two medical centers and a hospital on the way, and all the infrastructure of a sophisticated, exclusive, well-planned satellite community. Gated retreats with large freestanding homes set amidst lakes and parklands. Higher density, self-contained developments with various housing options and a sprinkling of up-market, exclusive condominium complexes with features and facilities usually only seen in glossy home beautiful magazines are all available.

And the citizens of Wesley Chapel are active in the parent-teacher associations, community service groups, and civic organizations. It makes a difference. There are three elementary schools here, a middle school and a modern high school with innovative programs that have produced academic excellence from students. The civic groups in the region were also active in the planning and development of the recently completed Wesley Chapel Performing Arts Center.

In fact, right here in Wesley Chapel, is the world-renowned Saddleback Resort. The Saddleback golf courses are five star standard, and the coaching clinics are conducted by names well-known in professional golf circles. The tennis courts and training facilities are regularly graced by players like Jennifer Capriati and our own world champion Jim Courier, played and practiced at Saddleback.

Although only a short drive from the non-stop action, beaches and commercial opportunities of Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, Wesley Chapel is in Pasco County, the southernmost region of Florida’s “Nature Coast.” And that “foot in both worlds” really sums up the appeal of the town.

Pasco County has a fascinating past with archaeological evidence showing human occupation from before 7000 bce.

After contact with the Spanish during the sixteenth century, descendants of these first inhabitants died out and the region remained relatively isolated and sparsely populated, inhabited mainly by members of the Seminole tribe. The Seminoles were a war like group of Native Americans fleeing the white encroachment of their tribal lands. Also entering the area were bands of African Americans fleeing slavery.

After a series of “Seminole Indian Wars” culminating in the massacre of Major Francis Dade and his men by a war party under the command of Chief Alligator in 1835, a peace treaty was signed in 1836. It was ironically signed at Fort Dade, built in what is now Dade City, in Northern Pasco County.

That opened the way for white settlement in the area and in 1845 a Post Office was established near the site of the Fort that had been abandoned by the army in the early 1840’s. The peace treaty with the Seminoles proved fragile, so the army rebuilt Fort Dade in 1849. It provided a refuge for settlers during what historians call the Third Seminole War. This period saw the deaths of a number of settlers, who had already established the first orange groves, before a lasting peace was established. The “lasting peace” did not benefit the Seminole tribes however, who were forcibly shipped to Oklahoma or driven into the Everglades.

Wesley Chapel is a wonderful place to visit. The area has a fascinating history, but more importantly, a very bright future.
